Dress Shape Diary

When brides come in to shop for their dream wedding dress, we often get asked which silhouette they should choose. This question is hard, as it changes depending on what you’re looking for and which parts of your body you like and want to highlight. For brides who are unfamiliar with the different wedding dress silhouettes available to choose from, we’re sharing the differences between them and what makes each stand out:

Ball Gown

Cardea by Justin Alexander Signature

One of the most recognizable silhouettes, the ball gown has been a popular choice among brides since the beginnings of the wedding dress itself. Instantly adding a royal, princess-like touch to the design, the ball gown is fitted, flaring out from the natural waist into a full skirt. The bold, rounded shape of the skirt is the defining feature, giving the dress bold drama with it’s iconic, bell-like shape.

A-line

Much like the ball gown, the A-line is considered a classic bridal silhouette. A staple among bridal designers, the A-line has the same slimming effect as the ball gown, with the skirt flaring out from the natural waist into a full skirtーbut the key difference lies in the skirt’s shape. Where a ball gown is full and rounded, an A-line gently flares into an A-shape that gives the silhouette its name.

Sheath

Marisa by Madison James

For brides who aren’t keen on a full skirt, the sheath brings you everything you need: the skirt hugs in closer to the body (but not quite tight) in a straight, simple shape that highlights your figure without complication. The perfect shape for brides seeking modern simplicity, the sheath instantly adds a laid-back, effortless elegance to a design that you won’t be able to get enough of.

Fit and Flare

Kenleigh by Maggie Sottero

One of the more modern silhouettes, yet also one of the most popular, the fit and flare is aptly named: fitted through the hip, the skirt does not begin flaring out until about mid-way down the thigh, creating an exaggerated hourglass silhouette that is figure flattering and sultry. The silhouette creates breathtaking curves, perfect for brides seeking a bold wedding dress.
