Mother of the Bride: How to Pick the Perfect Gown

Mother of the Bride: How to Pick the Perfect Gown

With your daughter’s wedding coming up, it’s natural to be worried about finding the perfect thing to wear. After all, it’s not every day you watch your little girl walk down the aisle, so you want to wear something that shows how excited you are about this new chapter in her life. If you’re looking for your perfect dress, here are some of our favorite tips:

Start Shopping Early

It’s easy to get so caught up in helping your daughter plan the wedding that you forget to shop for yourself. You’ll want to give yourself enough time for any potential alterations and to give the Mother of the Groom enough time to find her dress, as well!

Listen to the Bride

Since it’s her wedding, your daughter may have opinions on what she wants you to wear. Some brides want their moms in the same color as the bridal party, and others may not have a preference at all. Either way, it’s important to be sure you discuss the dress code with the bride so that you’re dressed appropriately for the occasion!

Take Cues from the Bridal Party

When choosing your Mother of the Bride dress, you want to choose a color that will look good in pictures next to the bridal party. For instance, if the bridesmaids are in a light blue, you may want to wear navy or champagne—something that will complement the color and go well with the bride’s chosen palette!

Communicate With the Mother of the Groom

Traditionally, the Mother of the Bride buys her dress first then calls the Mother of the Groom so she can start shopping. By no means do you need to stick to this, but it’s always a good idea to talk to the Mother of the Groom so that you don’t accidentally show up in the same color (or even the same dress!).
